Origata Binding

About this event

Origata bindingOrigata binding

Origata binding is a technique developed in the last decade by young French bookbinder, Julie Auzillon. Central to the technique is a spine piece that wraps around the text block serving as both the spine and part of the book’s covers. Hence the name ‘origata’ which refers to the Japanese art of wrapping objects in folded paper.

This workshop will teach the origata binding as adapted and taught by British bookbinder, Glenn Malkin, during the Bind23 conference in Brisbane.

It involves the creation of a single section text block, sewn onto a spine piece that wraps around the text block forming part of the book’s covers. The covers are constructed by lacing folios of card onto the spine piece using decorative straps. Endpapers attached to the spine piece and tipped onto the covers complete the structure.

This is an extremely versatile binding method offering great scope for creative interpretation through choice of materials and design elements. As it requires no special equipment the origata binding is perfect for binders of all skill levels.
You will need to bring your own personal tools (craft knife with spare blades, bonefolder, metal ruler, awl and needle - all as provided in the Introduction course). Also bring your lunch and an apron.
