TBC - Meeting 1 Report

Bernard Milford | Published on 8/21/2025
The first meeting of the Traditional Book Group was on Thursday. Over a dozen
members came along, and Jason said that half a dozen more had told him they would have liked to come. Our President Bill welcomed everyone, and Jason explained the Guild’s reasons for setting up the group. Numbers coming to bindery evenings were often low, except when there was a special demonstration, and it was felt that members would like the challenge of working on a specific project. It was hoped that, as the number of books made in the new group increased, there would be opportunities for exhibitions and perhaps competitions.

Members discussed some projects that could be a challenge for the group, such as a folding chessboard (not a book, but needing bookbinding techniques). The consensus was that the first project for the group would be a photo album known as the Ascona Album, named after the famous Centro del Bel Libro Ascona in Switzerland. Jason will be sending instructions and material lists. It was agreed that members would bring their own materials and tools, but Anna-Margot said that, when possible, the shop would be opened before group get-togethers.

Jason has the list of QBG members who have expressed interest in the TBG and will keep the group informed of meeting times, materials, instructions and so on. The group is open to all members, and we will cover current projects in the Update, so feel free to sign up and come along if a new project strikes your fancy. The next meeting, to get going on the photo album, will be on Thursday 4th September at 6:30 at BVAC.
