Meetings

Meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Parents' Room, Junction Park State School, Gowrie Street, Annerley, at 7.30pm. [see map] The room is available from 7.00pm for members to buy supplies, and to use the library. Anyone considering membership is welcome to attend a meeting. For more details please contact the Guild or check this website closer to the meeting date.

Jun. 17 Guest speaker Barbara Schmelzer
During her visit to Brisbane, Barbara will be giving a talk at the June meeting of the Guild entitled "The Year of the Master Bookbinder". Barbara will also conduct a two day workshop the following weekend. Click here for more information

Jul. 15

Guest speaker David Jolly
David will demonstrate the making of a case-bound square back photo album which requires no sewing or tapes, has pockets for the photos and is also suitable for presentations.


Aug. 19 Guest speaker Jenny Beale
Jenny will talk about the inside of a book from an editor's point of view. The editor's role is meant to be that of a silent partner ensuring that the author is understood without losing the authorial voice, at the same time checking that all facets of the work - text, illustrations, design, printing etc. - combine in their best possible form.

Demonstration by Lorraine Bates
Lorraine will demonstrate french sewing.


Nov. 18 Demonstration by Tricia Smout
Tricia will demonstrate an intriguing artists book structure known as a flag book.

Courses


The Guild holds courses in bookbinding several times each year. As well as the basic introductory course, more advanced subjects such as restoration and box/case making are covered. Course dates are dictated by demand and the availability of the tutor. Details of courses will be posted here as soon as they are scheduled.

Applications are open for the next Introductory Bookbinding course scheduled for 31 October and 1 November 2009. A follow-up morning on Saturday November 8 is offered at no extra cost to introduce students to the equipment available through the Guild and to allow them hands-on experience in gold tooling and type blocking.

The next Restoration of Cloth and Paper Bound Books course will be held over two Saturdays, on 1st and 8th August 2009.
Please note that a certain level of experience is required before attempting this course.

Workshops

Well-known bookbinder Barbara Schmelzer will be conducting a two day workshop in Brisbane on 20/21 June. Click here for more information


June McNicol will hold a morning workshop on the art of sewn head-bands at 110 Andrew Avenue, Tarragindi on Saturday June 6 at 9am. If you plan to attend, please let June know a few days beforehand.


June McNicol holds a free open workshop for members on the first Saturday of every month, from 9am to lunch. If you want to use the Guild's equipment - guillotine, plough, blocking press etc., or just want a bit of help, contact June (07 3848 3774) no later than the night before. (Please note that these workshops will not be held if a course date falls on the first Saturday of the month)
